10 Relaxing JRPGs to Play When You Want to Slow Down

Gaming doesn’t always need to be intense.

Sometimes the best games are the ones that let you slow down, settle into a world, and enjoy the journey without pressure. Many JRPGs are perfect for this kind of experience. Their slower pacing, turn-based combat, and focus on storytelling create a rhythm that can feel calming rather than stressful. Another thing that can make these games feel relaxing is that some have started to incorporate an auto battle system, which is always a welcomed option.

For players looking to unwind after a long day, here are ten JRPGs that are perfect for relaxing adventures. These are games that I have enjoyed. I have only included games in the list that I have experienced. If there are any other games that you feel should be on this list please let me know!

Although this list is numbered, these are listed in no particular order. I am not stating which one is the best, but simply listing 10 relaxing JRPGs.

1. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Few games capture the feeling of a peaceful adventure quite like Dragon Quest XI. The colourful world, charming characters, and classic turn-based combat create a comforting rhythm.

Exploring towns, listening to the gentle soundtrack, and progressing through the story at your own pace makes this one of the most relaxing JRPGs ever made.

2. Final Fantasy IX

With its whimsical medieval setting and memorable cast of characters, Final Fantasy IX feels like stepping into a storybook.

The slower pacing and beautiful soundtrack make it an ideal game to unwind with, especially during the quieter moments spent exploring towns and talking to NPCs.

3. Chrono Trigger

Despite its legendary status, Chrono Trigger remains one of the most accessible and relaxing JRPGs.

Its streamlined design means the story flows smoothly without excessive grinding, allowing players to enjoy the adventure without frustration.

4. Visions of Mana

The colours, the combat, everything about this game feels fun!

The vibrant atmosphere and characters keep you engaged, while also wanting to explore more.

5. Persona 5 Royal

While its dungeon sections can be intense, much of Persona 5 Royal is spent enjoying everyday life in Tokyo.

Visiting cafés, building friendships, and planning your daily schedule creates a unique rhythm that balances excitement with calm moments.

6. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Another classic entry in the Dragon Quest series, this game perfectly captures the joy of wandering through a colourful fantasy world. This was the first Dragon Quest game I played completely. The sounds, the enemies and the visuals are just so nostalgic when playing anything from this series now and it always brings me back to this game.

Its open environments and charming atmosphere make it easy to lose track of time while exploring.

7. Tales of Arise

This was a JRPG that took me by surprise. It is a must play for any JRPG. I had never played anything from this series and this was the perfect game to jump into as a newcommer.

The character development, connections, gameplay and again vibrant world kept me coming back for more.

8. Octopath Traveler Series

The beautiful HD-2D art style and atmospheric soundtrack give Octopath Traveler a calming, almost meditative quality.

Traveling between towns and following the stories of the eight characters creates a relaxed sense of adventure.

All Octopath traveller games, including 2 and 0 are all relaxing to play.

9. Final Fantasy VII

One of my favourite final fantasy games, the remakes so far have also been excellent. These are games that leave you wanting to explore everything and also completing mini games is fun and rewarding.

The story also speaks for itself.

10. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

This beloved JRPG is known for its detailed world and thoughtful storytelling.

Much of the game focuses on exploring towns, learning about characters, and slowly uncovering the larger story making it a wonderfully relaxing experience.

Why JRPGs Are Perfect for Relaxation

JRPGs often encourage a different pace compared to other genres.

Instead of constant action, they offer:

  • turn-based combat that rewards patience
  • long stories that unfold gradually
  • towns and environments designed for exploration

This slower rhythm allows players to fully immerse themselves in the world without feeling rushed.

Final Thoughts

Relaxing games remind us that gaming doesn’t always need to be fast or competitive.

Sometimes the most memorable experiences come from wandering through a peaceful town, listening to a beautiful soundtrack, and enjoying the journey one step at a time.

JRPGs have been providing those experiences for decades — and they remain one of the best genres for players looking to unwind.
